Sees Journal (“the Site,” “we,” “us”) is a small, independent, free guide to art, theater, and drag across multiple cities, currently including San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, and Boston. This policy applies to the entire Site and every city guide we publish. We collect as little as such a site can, we do not sell personal information, and we do not run advertising. This policy explains exactly what is collected, by whom, and why, and the choices you have. Using the Site means you accept this policy and our Terms of Use.
Usage analytics. The Site uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies and collects standard usage data — pages viewed, approximate (city-level) location, device and browser type, and similar signals — to help us understand, in aggregate, how the Site is used. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy; you can opt out with the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser.
Visit notifications. When a page is viewed, the Site sends the site owner a brief notification containing the page path, the referring site (for example, a search engine or a direct visit), and the approximate city-level location our hosting provider derives from your IP address. This tells us which parts of the Site are being used. It is not combined with your name or any account (the Site has no accounts), is not used to build individual profiles, and is not shared with anyone else.
Forms. If you submit the contact or newsletter form, the information you enter — such as your name and email address — is delivered to the site owner through our hosting provider’s form service so we can reply or send updates. We use it only for that purpose, we do not sell it, and you can unsubscribe or ask us to delete it at any time.
Server logs. Our hosting provider (Netlify) keeps standard server logs — IP address, request time, user agent — for security and operations, under its own retention practices.
Local preferences. Shows you save (the heart button), your selected city, and your Art / Theater choice are stored only in your own browser (local/session storage). They never leave your device, and clearing your browser data removes them.
Like most websites, the Site loads some resources from third parties. When your browser requests them, those parties receive standard request data such as your IP address and user agent, under their own privacy policies. The Site currently uses: Netlify (hosting and forms), Google Analytics (usage statistics), Google Fonts (typefaces), Google Maps / Street View (venue imagery on some pages), OpenStreetMap (map tiles), Open-Meteo (current weather for the selected city, using the city’s coordinates rather than your device location), unpkg (the Leaflet map library), and Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons (Artist-of-the-Day text and public-domain images). Event and venue images may load directly from the venue’s own website or image host. We do not control these services and are not responsible for their practices.
The only cookies the Site sets are Google Analytics cookies, used for aggregate statistics — not for advertising, retargeting, or cross-site tracking by us. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings at any time; the Site works fine without them.
We use the information above to operate and improve the Site, to see which listings and features people use, and to reply to messages. We do not sell or rent personal information, do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, do not build individual visitor profiles, and do not run ads. Aggregate, non-identifying statistics (for example, “the map got busier this month”) may inform editorial decisions.
Form submissions are kept only as long as needed to respond or to send the updates you asked for. Newsletter addresses are kept until you unsubscribe. Analytics data is retained per Google Analytics’ standard settings; visit notifications are transient messages, not a database. Server logs follow our host’s standard retention.
You can browse the Site without submitting any form. You can block cookies and analytics as described above. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter via any email we send or by asking through the contact page. You may also ask us what information we hold from your form submissions and ask us to correct or delete it — we honor such requests regardless of where you live, including rights that may apply under the California Consumer Privacy Act or similar laws. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising privacy rights, and we have never sold personal information.
Some browsers send “Do Not Track” or Global Privacy Control signals. The Site does not perform cross-site tracking in any case; our analytics runs the same way for all visitors and does not currently change behavior in response to these signals. Use the cookie and opt-out controls above to limit analytics.
The Site is a general-audience publication and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children; if you believe a child has submitted personal information through a form, contact us and we will delete it.
The Site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable measures appropriate to a site of this size. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and to the maximum extent permitted by law we cannot guarantee absolute security.
The Site is operated from the United States and data is processed there. If you visit from elsewhere, you understand that your information is processed in the U.S., where privacy laws may differ from those of your jurisdiction.
We may update this policy as the Site evolves, and will post the revised version here with a new “Last updated” date. Your continued use of the Site after a change constitutes acceptance.
